Happy August VenCaf Community! School is starting back up, summer is starting to wind down but, Venture Cafe is only getting hotter! This week we had the FIRST gathering in our new August monthly thematic programming, Civic Restoration. This programming will focus on community members and organizations that are working to progress the physical, digital & human elements in our community by way of restorative practices. So let’s get into the speakers this week that we’re talking about their effort in doing just that.

First, we heard from Christine Nobbe, a Gifted Education Specialist & member of the St. Louis Space Frontier. Christine brought her insight and passion for St. Louis’s space ecosystem in way of its history and its future specifically aimed around the Artemis program. She then orchestrated a community conversation based on others’ ideas on how one could create sustainable and innovative living conditions on the moon.

Following Christine, we heard from Jaqui Rogers, DEI Consultant for BJC Healthcare. Jaqui’s focus was on the social determinants of health in our community. She asked attendees to think about the many factors that could contribute to individual, community, and organizational well-being as well as showing the ways we can all address them.

Finally, we heard from Dan Hellmuth, Rodney Bonner & Steve O’Rourke, directors from Urban EcoBlock. This is a coalition made in hopes of addressing an equitable & ecological framework for rebuilding St. Louis at the block level. Their personal avenue for this was utilizing a form-based code and community land trust.

With those amazing three sessions, you can see how August is going to be shaping up in terms of our focus on the restoration of our city. If you’d like to see more of this, keep on the lookout on our website to see what we have in store in the near future! Thank you to all of our community members who came and/or spoke. That is your VenCap Recap for the week!
